1. Remove the toolbox cover and the side cover
from the left side as described in Chapter Fourteen.
2. Roll back the boot from the electrical cables.
3. Disconnect the two-pin pickup coil connector
(B, Figure 4) from its mate on the wiring harness.
4. If using an analog ohmmeter, set it to the R × 100
scale, and measure the stator coil resistance.
5. Connect the ohmmeter positive test probe to the
gray terminal (A, Figure 13) in the pickup coil side
of the connector; connect the negative test probe to
the black/blue terminal (B).
6. Replace the stator/pickup coil assembly, as de-
scribed in Charging System of this chapter, if the
pickup coil resistance is outside the range specified
in Table 1.

Continuity Test
1. Disconnect the two-pin diode connector from
the diode.
2. If using an analog ohmmeter, set it to the R × 1
scale.
3. Connect the ohmmeter positive test probe to the
blue/yellow terminal (A, Figure 14) in the diode;
connect the negative test probe to the blue/white
terminal (B). The diode should have continuity in
L/W
this direction.
4. Reverse the ohmmeter leads and check the conti-
L/Y
nuity. The diode should not have continuity in this
direction.
5. Replace the diode if it fails either portion of the
test.
Testing
The ignitor unit cannot be tested. If all other igni-
tion system components perform within test specifi-
cations, consider the ignitor unit defective by a
process of elimination.
Before purchasing a new ignitor unit, have the
system checked by a Yamaha dealership or another
qualified shop. Most motorcycle dealerships will
not accept returns on electrical components.
Removal/Installation
1. Remove the rider and passenger seats as de-
scribed in Chapter Fourteen.
2. Carefully disconnect the two electrical connec-
tors (A, Figure 15) from the ignitor unit.
3. Remove the two ignitor mounting screws (B,
Figure 15), and lift the ignitor unit from the ignitor
panel.
4. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the
