7. The fuel pump is faulty if fuel does not flow
from the fuel pump outlet hose. Replace the fuel
pump.
Resistance Test
1. Remove the toolbox cover and the side cover
from the left side as described in Chapter Fourteen.
2. Roll the boot from the connectors on the toolbox
panel.
3. Disconnect the two-pin fuel pump connector (A,
Figure 91) from its harness mate.
4. If using an analog ohmmeter, set it to the R × 1
scale.
5. Connect the ohmmeter positive test lead to the
blue/black terminal (A, Figure 93) in the pump side
of the connector. Connect the negative test lead to
the black terminal (B, Figure 93).
6. Measure the fuel pump resistance. Replace the
fuel pump if its resistance is outside the range speci-
fied in Table 2.
Relay Resistance Test
1. Remove the fuel tank and surge tank as de-
scribed in this chapter.
2. Remove the frame neck cover (Chapter Four-
teen).
3. Remove the starting circuit cutoff relay (C, Fig-
ure 75) from the mounting tang and disconnect the
connector from the relay.
4. Check the continuity of the fuel pump relay as
follows:
a. If using an analog ohmmeter, set it to the R ×
1 range.
b. Use a jumper wire to connect the positive bat-
tery terminal to the red/black terminal (A,
Figure 94) on the relay and connect the nega-
tive battery terminal to the blue/red terminal
(B).
c. Connect the ohmmeter positive test lead to
the red/black terminal (A, Figure 94) on the
relay and connect the negative test lead to the
blue/black terminal (C).
d. The fuel pump relay should have continuity
during this test. Replace the starting circuit
cutoff relay if there is no continuity.
AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM
The air induction system (AIS) reduces hydrocar-
bon emissions by promoting more complete com-
bustion. The system injects fresh air into each
exhaust port so any unburned fuel in the exhaust
gasses are burned instead of being released into the
atmosphere.
The system consists of an air cut valve, AIS filter,
a reed valve, as well as air and vacuum lines. During
normal operation, the air cut valve is open so sec-
ondary air flows from the AIS filter, through the air
cut valve, to the reed valve, then into AIS fitting at
the exhaust port in each cylinder.
The air cut valve, however, closes during deceler-
ation to prevent backfiring. When the throttle is
closed, vacuum from the intake port closes the air
cut valve so secondary air cannot flow to the reed
valve.
