1080i
1080i is the short form for a format of high-definition video modes. 1080 denotes the number
of horizontal scan lines - also known as vertical resolution - and the letter i stands for
interlaced. In the alternate format of high-definition video mode, known as 1080p, the p
stands for progressive scan. 1080i is generally used instead of 1440x1080, at a frame rate of
29.97 (30000/1001); whereas, 1080p is used instead of 1920x1080 (full HD), at a frame rate
of 23.976 fps (24000/1001).
1080p
1080p is the short form for a category of HDTV video modes. The number 1080 represents
1,080 lines of vertical resolution (1,080 horizontal scan lines); whereas, the letter p stands for
progressive scan (which means that the image is not interlaced). 1080p can be referred to as
full HD or full high definition, although 1080i is also referred to as "Full HD" (1920x1080
pixels). The term usually implies a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, that is, a horizontal
resolution of 1920 pixels. This creates a frame resolution of 1920× 1080, or 2,073,600 pixels
in total. The frame rate in hertz can be either implied by the context or specified after the
letter p (or i), such as 1080p30, which means 30 Hz.
2CIF
2CIF defines a video with a resolution of 704 × 288 pixels and uses progressive scanning.
4CIF
4CIF defines a video resolution of 704 × 576 pixels.
720p
720p is the short form for a category of HDTV video modes. The number 720 stands for the
720 horizontal scan lines of display resolution (also known as 720 pixels of vertical
resolution); whereas, the letter p stands for progressive scan or non-interlaced. When
broadcast at 60 frames per second, 720p features the highest temporal (motion) resolution
possible under the ATSC standard. Progressive scanning reduces the need to prevent flicker
by filtering out fine details; hence, sharpness is much closer to 1080i than the number of scan
lines would suggest.
