JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) Originally the name of a committee for
graphics standards developed, co-sponsored by the International Organization for
Standards (ISO) and the International Telecommunications Union-
Telecommunications (ITU-T). The bit-mapping graphics file standard developed by
this committee is also called JPEG and is widely used on the Internet. Generally a
JPEG graphic is compressed at a higher rate (e.g. 10:1 or 20:1) than a GIF file.
JPEG files suffer from very little color or brightness degradation, though this varies
depending on the amount of compression used. There is no limit on resolution or file
size.
