Microwave Wireless transmission at very high frequency to deliver
telecommunications services, including TV distribution, between two points. It is
dependent on line of sight.
MIPS Millions of Instructions Per Second. A measure of computer speed.
MIS (Management Information System) The person or group in a company who
manages a company's entire computer system, including installed LANs, WANs and
or mainframe computers.
MMR (Modified Modified Read) This is a compression technique widely used by
facsimile machines for the compression and decompression of images when
transferred from machine to machine. Most digital copier manufactures employ the
use of MMR when they are scanning originals into the copier memory for being
processed. The compression achieved with MMR algorithms comes from the fact
that it is more efficient to store numbers representing the number of pixels in a given
run ("run lengths") rather than the individual pixels themselves. For example, if 347
white pixels are followed by 93 black pixels it takes less space to store the two
numbers 347 and 93 than to store 440 individual bits of pixel information.
Moir* Pronounced mor-ray. The undesired effect caused by overlaying dot patterns
usually halftone representation of photographs which are incompatible.
MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) A term describing the reliability of equipment
established by testing kit to its limits and promoting the MTBF as a selling point. As
most users know, however, laboratory and operational environments have little in
common.
MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) A measure of the complexity and modularity of
equipment, the higher the MTTR the more complex or less modular the equipment.
MSAU (Multi-Station Access Unit) A wiring concentrator on a Token Ring network
that allows devices, typically eight to 12 Token Ring stations, to be connected to the
ring. Relays in the MAU ensure the integrity of the network when devices are attached
or removed. A Managed Multi-Port/Multi-Station Access Unit has built-in network
management support.
MS-Net Microsoft DOS-based networking system software product (Microsoft
Network).
