BIOS Recovery
It is unlikely that anything will interrupt the flash upgrade process. However, if an
interruption occurs, it is possible the BIOS could be left in an unusable state. The steps below
describe how to recover from this kind of problem.
NOTE: Because of the small amount of code available in the non-erasable boot
block area, no video is available to direct the procedure. You must monitor the
flash recovery by listening to the speaker.
1. Turn off power to the computer, then disconnect the power cord and all external
cables connected to the computer.
2. Remove the computer's right-side panel (refer to section 4.2.5.), as viewed from the
back.
3. Lay the computer on its side, open side up.
4. Move the Recovery Boot Enable jumper at J9A1 from pins 1-2 to pins 2-3.
5. Insert the bootable flash upgrade diskette into drive A.
6. Turn on the computer.
7. Listen to the speaker. You should hear beeps in the following sequence:
a. After you turn on the computer, the speaker beeps once. This beep marks the
beginning of the power on self test.
b. After a short delay (less than 10 seconds), the speaker beeps again at a higher
frequency. This marks the beginning of the recovery process. At this point, the
recovery code is being copied into the flash device.
c. After about 30 seconds, the speaker beeps twice at the higher frequency, marking
the end of the recovery process.
8. Turn off power to the computer.
9. Move the Recovery Boot Enable jumper back to pins 1-2.
10. Replace the computer's right-side panel (refer to section 4.2.5), as viewed from the
rear.
11. Connect the power cord and all external cables to the computer, leave the flash
upgrade diskette in drive A, and turn on the power.
12. Continue with the normal upgrade using the upgrade utility.
