Procedure 7
The purpose of this procedure is to determine if diagnostics testing can identify possible
problems with the HDD. To perform this procedure, perform the following Check.
Check (A) Perform QA Plus Diagnostics testing on the HDD. (B) Attempt to copy some
files from A: to C: and C: to A:.
If no HDD errors are reported, perform the Repair Completion Process. If HDD
errors are reported, perform Procedure 10.
Procedure 8
The purpose of this procedure is to determine if the HDD is making abnormal noises, which
could indicate a problem with the HDD. To perform this procedure, perform the following
Check.
Check Listen for abnormal noises coming from the HDD.
If abnormal noises are coming from the HDD, perform Procedure 11. If abnormal
noises are not coming from the HDD, perform Procedure 9.
Procedure 9
The purpose of this procedure is to determine if connector pins on the HDD or the system
board are damaged or causing a short. To perform this procedure, begin with Check 1 and
continue as instructed.
Check 1 Inspect the HDD and the system board connectors for damaged or shorted pins.
If damage or shorts are discovered, perform Check 2. If damage or shorts are not
discovered, perform Check 3.
Check 2 (A) Replace the damaged FRU (refer to Chapter 4). (B) Test to determine if the
original problem still exists.
If the original problem still exists, perform Procedure 6. If the original problem
no longer exists, perform Check 3.
Check 3 (A) Perform QA Plus Diagnostics testing on the HDD. (B) Check the screen to
determine if HDD seek or status errors are reported.
If HDD seek or status errors are reported, perform Procedure 11. If these errors
are not reported, perform Procedure 10.
Procedure 10
The purpose of this procedure is to determine if reformatting the HDD will rectify the
problem. To perform this procedure, begin with Check 1 and continue as instructed.
Check 1 (A) Perform a DOS format on the HDD with a system transfer. (B) Test to
determine if the format completed without errors.
If the format completes without errors, perform Check 2. If the format did not
complete without errors, perform Procedure 11.
