DIAGNOSIS OF ABNORMAL NOISE

There are various types of noise, ranging from those produced in the engine compartment to those from the pas-

ABNORMAL NOISE FROM COMPRESSOR
Condition
D During compressor operation, a
rumbling noise is heard
proportional to engine
revolutions.
D A loud noise is heard at a certain
rpm, disproportionately to engine
revolution.
D A loud rattle is heard at low
engine rpm.
ABNORMAL NOISE FROM MAGNETIC CLUTCH
Condition
D A rumbling noise is heard when
compressor is not operating.
D A chattering noise is heard when
compressor is engaged.
ABNORMAL NOISE FROM TUBING
Condition
D A droning noise is heard inside
vehicle, but not particularly
noticeable in engine
compartment.
ABNORMAL NOISE FROM CONDENSER
Condition
D Considerable vibration in
condenser.
Possible Cause
D Inadequate clearance in piston
area (piston or swash-plate).
D Loose or faulty V-belt.
D Loose mounting bolts.
D Loose compressor center bolt.
Possible Cause
D Worn or damaged bearings.
D Faulty clutch gap (excessive).
D Worn clutch friction surface.
D Compressor oil leaked from shaft
seal, contaminating the friction
surface.
Possible Cause
D Faulty tubing clamps.
D Resonance caused by pulsation
from variations in refrigerant
pressure.
Possible Cause
D Resonance from condenser
mounting stay and body.
Correction
D Repair or replace compressor as
necessary.
D Adjust V-belt tension, or
replace belt.
D Retighten mounting bolts.
D Retighten center bolt.
D Replace compressor if it was
operated in this condition for a
long time.
Correction
D Replace bearings.
D Adjust clutch gap.
D Replace clutch.
D Replace compressor shaft oil
seal.
Correction
D Reposition clamps or increase
the number of clamps.
D Attach a silencer to tubing, or
