Hard Disk Subsystem on the Server Blade

Each server blade can accommodate two 3.5-inch hot-swappable SCA2 SCSI
hard disk drive (HDD) modules.
The hard disk drives are controlled by the on-board Adaptec HostRAID U320
7902 controller. Usually two disks are mirrored in a RAID 1 configuration (see
„Notes on RAID levels").
RAID level 10 can be configured for the server blades 4 and 10
i
combining onboard HDDs with HDDs connected via the SCSI blade.
(see
page
02-BX600-60).
Notes on RAID levels
– RAID level 0
Rebuild is not possible. If a hard disk drive fails, its data is lost.
– RAID level 1 without standby hard disk (mirroring)
Rebuild on the new hard disk drive is carried out automatically when the old
disk drive is replaced.
If a hard disk drive belongs to a disk array operated in RAID level 1, it
i
must be replaced with a hard disk drive with the same capacity or higher.
A rebuild of the data on the new hard disk drive is performed automati-
cally after the replacement, provided that the onboard HostRAID
controller is configured correctly.

Installing/replacing hard disk drives

Electrostatically discharge yourself by touching a grounded object before
!
handling the components. Be aware that electrostatic-sensitive devices
(ESDs) should only be held at the edges and placed on a pad which is
free of electrostatic charge.
Any devices or tools that are used must be free of electrostatic charge.
For this purpose wear an electrostatic wristband or use a suitable
grounding cable that connects you to the external chassis of the system
unit.
