Step 3: Test the alternator.
Use a multimeter to perform the following steps to test the alternator:
1.
Go to
Preparing for Troubleshooting and/or Testing (page 22)
2.
Remove the battery cover to access the battery at the rear of the machine. With the engine off, measure
the 12 Vdc battery voltage. It should be 12.5 to 12.8 volts.
Note:
As part of this step, verify that the battery terminals and cable clamps are clean and not corroded.
Note:
If this reading is 12.4 Vdc or less, the alternator may not be properly charging the battery. It is also
possible that the 12 Vdc battery could be beginning to fail.
3.
Start the engine.
4.
Measure the battery voltage while the engine is running. It should be higher than 12.8 volts. Readings of
13.8 to 14.5 volts are typical.
5.
Shut off the engine.
Pass
The voltage readings were good. Go to Step 4.
Fail
The voltage readings were not good. Go to Step 5.
Step 4: Test the wiring harness.
Note:
Make sure that the engine is shut off before doing this step.
