Introduction

This section covers both the wireless networking and Bluetooth features
of the controller. Wireless refers to 802.11b wireless communications
standard. The Bluetooth wireless technology allows connectivity and
printing without requiring network user authentication.
Bluetooth
The Bluetooth option installs and operates in conjunction with the
wireless or embedded network cards without any interference. To use the
Bluetooth option, the following hardware is needed on the controller side:
The 3com Wireless Bluetooth USB Adapter provides reliable performance
with connection speeds up to 1 Mbps and distances of 10 meters
(approximately 33 feet). It also offers built-in security such as
authentication and 128-bit encryption.
On the client side, a Bluetooth PC card such as the TOSHIBA Bluetooth
PC Card, model PA3053U, that includes software support for the
Hardcopy Cable Replacement Profile (HCRP) standard.
Wireless Networking
There are two types of wireless networks: Infrastructure and Ad Hoc.
In the Infrastructure type, a number of base stations, called access points
(AP), are connected to a wired Ethernet network. These APs can transmit
and receive over a radius of up to 100 meters. Users with wireless client
devices such as notebooks access the network through the nearest AP,
and can move around the site without losing the connection.
In the Ad Hoc type, two or more devices form a small temporary network,
communicating directly with each other.
The IEEE 802.11b standard for wireless communications specifies a
security method called Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) which restricts
unauthorized access to the wireless network.
