Performance Monitoring Counters
The automatic Performance Monitoring (PM) function aids in the maintenance, operations, and trouble clearing
of the network-side facility. The PM functions refer to in-service monitoring of equipment conditions and
transmission quality using PM parameter data registers. The PM data is collected for critical equipment as well as
for facility path, section, and line parameters.
The PM functions accumulate data for specific performance parameters. These parameters enable service
providers to offer the following features:
■ Detection of gradual increase in error rate and correction of certain maintenance problems before service is
affected
■ Guaranteed service to end users by using PM data as evidence of high signal-path quality
The PM data is stored in the following registers using two different protocols:
■ Cumulative registers, which have no timing component. Generally, these registers hold up to 2
and roll back to a value of 1 when the maximum count is exceeded.
■ Timed registers, sometimes referred to as binned registers, of which two types exist:
• 15-minute registers that are automatically initialized on the quarter hour. Thirty-two 15-minute registers
provide history storage for the previous 8 hours of PM counts.
• 1-day registers that are automatically initialized every 24 hours (typically at midnight). Thirty-two 1-day
registers provide history storage for the previous 32 days activity.
