1.6.1
NETCONF
NETCONF is a Remote Procedure Call (RPC)-based protocol used to manage network devices in vendor-agnostic
fashion. NETCONF is designed to support machine-to-machine communication, typically between network
devices and an SDN controller, for example, Fujitsu Virtuora NC.
1FINITY NEs support the NETCONF protocol, using YANG data models in combination with NETCONF to
communicate device capability, configuration, and state information. Both NETCONF and YANG use Extensible
Markup Language (XML) encoding.
SDN controllers, for example, Virtuora NC, manage 1FINITY NEs over TCP/IP network connections using the
NETCONF protocol. Information is exchanged in XML format between the NETCONF client (the SDN controller)
and the NETCONF server (the 1FINITY NE) on a secure connection-oriented session. State data is separated from
configuration data. NETCONF provides RPCs that allow the client to query the server configuration and state and
allow the client to edit the server configuration. The client can subscribe to notifications from the server.
Note: For more detailed NETCONF information, refer to 1FINITY NETCONF Protocol User Guide, available on the
Fujitsu Partners website, https://partners.fnc.fujitsu.com/documentation.
1.6.2
Simple Network Management Protocol
SNMP is an application-layer protocol defined by the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) in RFC 1157 for
exchanging management information between network devices. It is a part of the Transmission Control Protocol/
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite. SNMP is one of the widely accepted protocols used to manage and monitor
network elements. Most of the professional-grade network elements come bundled with an SNMP agent. These
agents have to be enabled and configured to communicate with the Network Management System (NMS).
SNMP Traps
An SNMP trap is an event notification that is sent from an SNMP agent to one or more SNMP managers when an
extraordinary event, for example, an alarm, occurs. The SNMP agent generates SNMP traps for all standing
conditions unless the standing condition disables the agent.
Note: For more detailed SNMP information, refer to 1FINITY SNMP User Guide, available on the Fujitsu Partners
website, https://partners.fnc.fujitsu.com/documentation.
